Metric Definitions

Age and Gender distribution is by percentages of the population aged 16-64.

Broadband Internet Subscribers is per 100 Population.

Broadband Internet Subscribers Rank: Shows each country's rank in broadband Internet subscriptions among 133 economies 2008.

Ethnicity: A list of ethnic groups, usually including a percent of total population.

GDP (US$ Millions): Gross Domestic Product valued at current prices 2008.

Global Competitiveness Index: Each country's rank among 133 economies based on the performance of Institutions, Infrastructure, Macroeconomic Stability, Health and Primary Education, Higher Education and Training, Goods Market Efficiency, Labor Market Efficiency, Financial Market Sophistication, Technological Readiness, Market Size, Business Sophistication and Innovation. Switzerland is ranked number one.

Income: Data is based on latest information on Gini Index, population below poverty line and income distribution across population quintiles available from the Human Development reports published by UNDP. For Taiwan, the data is obtained using the poverty line and Gini Index figures only, an account of non-availability of income distribution across population quintiles data from UNDP. The measure of income used to derive all indicators is GDP (PPP), data for which is principally sourced from the IMF.

Internet Penetration (Internet World Stats): Anyone currently in capacity to use the Internet. The two requirements for a person to be considered an Internet User are:
(1) access to an Internet connection point, and
(2) basic knowledge required to use web technology.

Internet Penetration (Eurostat): Covers all individuals aged 16 to 74 who access the Internet, on average, at least once a week, within the last three months before the survey. Use includes all locations and methods of access.

Internet Penetration (% population): Penetration corresponds to the percentage of the total population of a given country that uses the Internet. (Internet users are defined above.)

Landline Phones in Use: The total number of main telephone lines in use 2008.

Landline Phones in Use, Country Comparison to the World: Each country's rank in landline phone subscriptions among 231 economies.

Landline Subscriptions is per 100 Population.

Market Research Spend is Per Capita US$.

Market Research Spend by Research Method, Percent Quantitative.

Market Research Spend by Research Method, Percent Qualitative.

Mobile Phones in Use: The total number of mobile cellular telephone subscribers 2008.

Mobile Phones Rank: Each country's rank in mobile phone subscriptions among 133 economies 2008.

Mobile Phones in Use, Country Comparison to the World: Each country's rank in mobile phone subscriptions among 222 economies.

Mobile Phone Subscriptions is per 100 Population.

Network Readiness Index: Each country's rank among 133 economies based on their preparedness to use Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) effectively; the readiness of individuals, businesses and governments to use and benefit from ICT; and use of the latest ICT.

Percentage of Households by Income Bracket: Percentage of households in income brackets USD absolute—ranges offered are 0-2000, 2000-4000, 4000-10000, 10000-20000, 20000-40000, 40000-75000, and 75000+; and percentage of population in income bracket USD (PPP) absolute—ranges offered are 0-500, 500-1000, 1000-2500, 2500-5000, 5000-10000, 10000-20000, and 20000+.

Primary Language Spoken: An ordered list of languages spoken in an individual country, sometimes including the percent of total population speaking that language.

Population: An estimate from the US Bureau of the Census based on statistics from population censuses, vital statistics registration systems, or sample surveys pertaining to the recent past and on assumptions about future trends as of December 31, 2009.
